Rovers Hit the Road This Weekend Before Returning Home on July 8th

BARRIE - For the first time since late May, the Simcoe County Rovers will not host any home matches on the weekend, but that does not make this weekend any less important.

On Canada Day, the men travel to St. Catharines to take on 3-7-2 St. Catharines Roma.

For the men, it is an important game coming off a 3-2 win over Windsor TFC on Saturday.

In the match, Ethan Beckford gave the home side a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute before the team doubled their lead in the 61st minute on a goal from Reshon Phillip.

Beckford then scored his second of the game and ninth on the season four minutes later to all but secure the win, even though Windsor TFC managed to score two late goals to make the game a bit more interesting.

The win has the Rovers fifth place in the League1 standings ahead of Friday’s contest, which can see the Rovers move as high as second place with a win.

The Rovers, who are currently on a four-game unbeaten streak, sit three points ahead of Guelph United for the last playoff spot.

They have help on the way too, as the team announced this week the signing of former youth international Justin Yarde.

Yarde began this season with North Mississauga FC, where he scored twice in seven games for the club.

As for the women, they are 8-2-4 and as is the case with their male counterparts, they sit fifth place in the League1 standings.

They are coming off a 0-0 draw against the first-place Woodbridge Strikers on Saturday ahead of a road date with 7-6-0 St. Catharines Roma on Friday.

The women, who lost only once in June, will be without star goalkeeper Yazmeen Jamieson, though, who was recently called up by the Jamaican National Team for their CONCACAF Women’s Championship Qualification Round.

The women return home on July 16th for their last home game of the season when they take on ProStars FC, while the men return home on July 8th against North Mississauga FC.

Kick-off for the men is set for 8 pm under the lights at J.C. Massie Field at Georgian College.
