BARRIE - They are going streaking.
After a 1-0 win over St. Catharines Roma on Canada Day, the Simcoe County Rovers men’s team (8-2-3) has extended their unbeaten streak to five games heading into Friday’s home match against 4-7-2 North Mississauga FC.
The Rovers, who now sit in sole possession of fourth place in the League1 standings – and three points out of first – won the game thanks to a 70th-minute goal from Ethan Beckford.
The fact that it was Beckford who scored the goal for the Rovers is no surprise, given the tear he has been on.
Beckford now has 10 goals on the season, which places him into a tie for third in the league in goals.
The heroics of Beckford was not the only reason for Rovers won, as goalkeeper Ryan Collins picked up his second clean sheet of the season in place of starting goalkeeper Ricky Gomes, who is currently injured.
The men’s game is the only home game for the Rovers this weekend, with the women facing Guelph – in Guelph – on Sunday, so be sure not to miss Friday’s match, which will include fan giveaways on Barrie Nissan Night.
Speaking of the women, they are coming off a 2-2 draw with Roma on Canada Day and now sit 8-2-5, good enough for fifth place in the League1 standings.
The women have picked up a point in at least nine of their last ten games and that has given them some breathing room in their quest to lock down a playoff spot, as the team sits six points up on North Toronto Nitros, the team who is on the outside looking in if the playoffs began today.
They return to Georgian College on Saturday, July 16th for what will amazingly be their last home game of the 2022 regular season.
